Cars that are driven daily are exposed to plenty elements and conditions that are quite punishing to the finish. No amount of maintenance is going to keep your car looking pristine forever. A refinishing job is inevitable. When it comes to refinishing, you need to choose what type of finish to use. There are three main types of car paints to choose from: enamel, urethane and lacquer.
Among these three, lacquer must be avoided for cars that see plenty of time on the streets. Car lacquering is a finishing technique that is mostly used for cars that are meant to be displayed in car shows, collection galleries and museums. The smoothness and shine of lacquer finish turns a car into an eye candy.
The problem is that lacquer is too fragile for practical vehicles. Lacquer ages very quickly compared to enamel or urethane. You have to devote plenty of time and effort in maintaining the finish. If not properly maintained, it can crack and become chalky in just a few years.
Enamel and urethane finishes are ideal for a daily driver due to their durability. They require less maintenance and retain the appearance for a longer amount of time. If you were to choose a paint for a car that sustained body damage, these two types of paint are what you should consider. An experienced refinisher can make your car look like it came straight from the manufacturer.
